Flash floods hit Padang, 10 missing

PADANG - Flash floods that occurred in two locations: on the road of Andalas University Campus (Unand) and in the back office of  Padang City PDAM Gunung Panggilun , the Western District of Padang, on Tuesday afternoon resulted in 10 people missing.

Torrential rains that hit parts of Padang, West Sumatra, since Tuesday afternoon, causing two major rivers that cut through the city overflowed. A number of areas in Batang Arau river and Batang Kuranji started to be flooded.

According to data of Disaster Operations Control Center in West Sumatra, one wooden house in Ujung Tanah, near the Campus UPI, District Lubuk Begalung, which is  in the flow of Batang Arau, washed away by a flood from the river flows.


"10 people reported missing and are still in search," said manager Pusdalops West Sumatra, Ade Edward.

Two major rivers that cut through the city grow from a couple of hours ago. Overflowing of river Batang Kuranji that disgorge in Lamau Manis, overflowing into the interspace Kalumbuak and Parak Kopi, not far from Padang City PDAM. While overflowing rivers Batang Arau flooded Indarung, Lubuk Begalung, and Marapalam.

"Areas flooded is in low areas, the current water level still rising," said Ade.

So far, not certainty yet how many housing units were washed by two major rivers that end into Padang beach. According to some information, the flood hit Desa Gunung Nago, Limau Manis,
Padang. Many houses were flooded.

"A lot of people were displaced, but so far no instructions to evacuate settlements, especially along the great river," said Ade.
