Madonna to critics: review my movie, not me

Madonna on Monday said she said she doesn't mind any criticism of her filmmaking abilities, so long as it is directed at her movie and not at herself.

The pop star told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival, where she is promoting her second film "W.E.", she had to earn her reputation as a musician and she expected to do the same as a film director.

"I had the same kind of pressure when I began my music career," Madonna told reporters. "I was nervous, and I didn't know what to expect, and people didn't know what to expect."

The film, which premiered at the Venice film festival and is screening at Toronto, has been characterized by critics as visually stunning, but lacking in focus and burdened by weak performances.

"I can tell when people are reviewing my film and when they're reviewing me personally," Madonna said when asked whether she cared about what critics thought. "So when they stick to the film, then I do care."

"W.E." stars Abbie Cornish as a young New Yorker in the 1990s who becomes infatuated with the 1930s marriage of King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson, played by Andrea Riseborough. It follows Madonna's first feature, 2008's "Filth and Wisdom," which performed poorly at the box office.

Britain's The Guardian newspaper was the harshest among the critics, giving the film just one star out five, while the Daily Telegraph gave a more positive three star review.

The budget of W.E. is estimated to be around $15 million, and it hits movie theaters in the United States in December, prompting one journalist to ask Madonna about her Oscar hopes for the film.

"My legs and my fingers are crossed," she quipped.

Madonna : Bahas Film saya, Bukan Saya

Obama sends jobs plan to Congress

President Barack Obama sent his jobs bill to Congress on Monday and proposed paying for it by eliminating $467 billion in tax breaks for richer Americans and companies, meeting immediate resistance from Republicans.

The White House objective is to put lawmakers in a tight spot: Support Obama's jobs package or risk being portrayed as doing nothing to improve the economy heading into presidential and congressional elections in November 2012.

The U.S. economy, the world's largest, is mired in 9.1 percent unemployment and flirting with another recession as Europe's debt woes compound fears over the global outlook. U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will attend part of a meeting of euro zone finance ministers on Friday in Poland.

Obama, who pushed through an $800 billion economic stimulus package in 2009, stepped up his campaign to sell his latest recovery proposals to American voters.

"This is a bill that is based on ideas from both Democrats and Republicans and this is a bill that Congress needs to pass -- no games, no politics, no delays," he said at a White House event before the text of his jobs legislation was sent to Congress.

But the Democratic president's ideas to pay for his $447 billion plan will be hard for Republicans to swallow.

Under pressure from anti-tax Tea Party conservatives, Republicans have fought all of Obama's previous proposals to increase taxes and were hardening their position against the new plan days after sounding conciliatory.

"I hope the president is not suggesting that we pay for his proposals with a massive tax increase," said Eric Cantor, the No. 2 Republican in the House of Representatives.

White House budget director Jack Lew outlined Obama's proposals for paying for the plan, targeting the rich and corporations as the president has in the past to no avail.

The biggest item would raise $400 billion by limiting deductions and exemptions on individuals who earn more than $200,000 per year and families who earn more than $250,000.

City counties ranked healthier than rural!

Urban settings were found in new study to be more conducive to good health than rural ones.

(CBS News)

Many people think of the city lifestyle as unhealthy, associating it with noise, pollution, crime, dense populations, a fast pace, and high stress levels. Many aspire to leaving the city for the country and the healthier lifestyle they think more tranquility brings. Fresh air, open spaces and chirping birds should be conducive to a much healthier lifestyle, or so the thinking goes

But, reports CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano, a new study seems to dispel those notions.

Cities once infamous for pollution, crime, crowding and infectious diseases have cleaned up their act.

"They may have a better educational system," says Patrick Remington, project director of County Health Rankings, a report published by the University of Wisconsin that ranks more than 3,000 counties nationwide against others in their states.

"They may have more job opportunities," Remington continued. "All these things come together to make urban areas (and), in particular, suburban communities, healthier than their rural counterparts."

The report found that 48 percent of the healthiest counties were urban or suburban, while 84 percent of the unhealthiest counties were rural.

"New York City," says Remington, "is one of the densest urban areas in the country, but it has a reasonably good health outcome. It has policies that encourage people to get out and walk, and clean indoor air policies, and policies that that help people pick healthy foods."

Urbanites like Gina Kamburowski, who lives in Manhattan, say city life makes it convenient to stay healthy. "I have my gym," she says, "which is about three blocks away from me. I have yoga, which is also about three blocks away from me. There really isn't an excuse to, to not work out and not be healthy for me."

The city has its own problems, such as higher rates of sexually-transmitted diseases, lower birth rates, and more excessive drinking.

And city dwellers say their lives are more stressful. "It kind of fluctuates between being incredibly hectic to moderately busy," says Kamburowski, "but I'm definitely on the go morning, noon and night."

Just 90 miles north of New York City is Sullivan County - the home of Woodstock. With farms, fresh air, mountain streams.

But, in the Catskill Mountains, health ratings aren't what you might expect.

"The more economically challenged an area, the less of an ability (its residents) have to access quality healthcare regularly," points out County Manager David Fanslau, who tells the story of a struggling community.

"Sullivan County," he notes, "has a very high rate of poverty. Our unemployment rate is higher than the rest of Hudson Valley in New York State."

Dr. Jeffrey Weinstein says, though agriculture and farmed goods are abundant, residents are no longer necessarily eating farm-to-mouth.

"We see a lot more obesity and diabetes," he says, "because, with a poorer economic status, the food that is cheaper is usually the unhealthy food."

Rural residents, like those in Sullivan County, are more likely to be obese, sedentary, and smoke cigarettes. They also face higher rates of diabetes, stroke, heart attacks and high blood pressure.

Says Fanslau, "The (more the ) ability of a rural county such as Sullivan to give access to preventative healthcare, for preventative medicine, the better off they will be, the better off the county will be."

Sullivan County is implementing health initiatives like those found in New York City.

"What we really want," says Remington, "is people to understand is that their own health can be affected by where they live -- that it takes a healthy community to really have a healthy person and a healthy lifestyle."

County Health Ratings says the healthiest people of all are suburbanites. They generally rate their own health the highest and have fewer premature deaths than either their urban or rural counterparts.

The rankings are intended to motivate communities to become healthier places for people to live, learn, work and play।

In search of Cleopatra

In search of Cleopatra

Most of the few documented representations of Cleopatra are found on coins.

Most of the few documented representations of Cleopatra are found on coins. (CBS)

(CBS News)

Forbes Magazine is out with its list of the world's most powerful women. Lady Gaga made the list. So did First Lady Michelle Obama, and Melinda Gates. But none of them - Rita Braver now tells us - holds a candle to that force of nature we call Cleopatra:

She has been celebrated in film, immortalized in paintings and sculpture. And more than 2,000 years after she lived, Queen Cleopatra VII, who ruled the sprawling kingdom of Egypt for 22 years, is still a mesmerizing force.

"I just think it's hard to name another woman in history who is this commanding, and for that matter this enduring," said author Stacy Schiff.

So enduring that Pulitzer Prize-winning author Schiff's recent biography of Cleopatra became a bestseller.

Seems we can't get enough of a Queen who had liaisons and children with two Roman legends - Julius Caesar and his loyal general Mark Antony - and was the wealthiest person of her time.

Shiff said her riches equaled that of all the hedge fund managers of yesteryear, rolled into one.

You might be surprised to learn that Cleopatra didn't come from a long line of Egyptians. She was descended from the Greek General Ptolemy, who served under Alexander the Great.

It was a dynasty in which sisters wed brothers - royal incest.

"Cleopatra's parents were probably siblings," Schiff said. "She has one set of grandparents. In Cleopatra's case, the younger brother was ten. It's very doubtful that the marriage was consummated. And he is eliminated in the civil war that the two of them go on to fight."

She was actually losing that war against her brother when - as the 1963 movie starring Elizabeth Taylor shows - she had herself smuggled in to meet the great Roman leader Julius Caesar, who had come to Egypt to settle the conflict.

"Was Caesar smitten immediately, do you think?" Braver asked.

"We don't know if he's smitten," Schiff said. "We know that within a couple of weeks she is pregnant with his child. And we know that within a couple of months he has reinstalled her on the throne of her own country."

"She has been for years painted as a kind of wanton seductress. Is that fair?" asked Braver.

"You could also say a very clever political strategist," Schiff replied.

And though Cleopatra has been portrayed by great beauties - from Taylor to Vivien Leigh to Claudette Colbert - the REAL queen did not get by on looks:

"We have that from Plutarch, who says outright, 'There were many who could compare with her in terms of her physical attributes, but it was her personality, it was the charm of her presence that was irresistible,'" Schiff said.

Most of the few documented representations of Cleopatra are found on coins.

Franck Goddio pointed out her likeness: "You see the nose, a very strong nose and hard profile."

"She looks a little like George Washington," mused Braver.

Goddio is an underwater archeologist who in 1996 discovered remains of Cleopatra's Alexandria, the magnificent city that was the capital of Egypt in her time:

"We started to dive, we started to excavate...and it was fabulous, fabulous - everything was there and waiting for us," he said.

While much of ancient Alexandria was simply built over in the course of 2,000 years, natural disaster - earthquakes and tidal waves - toppled part of the city into the sea (ironically, preserving important artifacts underwater)।

Some have been rescued, restored, and are on display in a traveling exhibit now at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

"Feels like we are walking absolutely in her footsteps," Braver says of the exhibit.

Cleopatra would have stood before these statues to greet her subjects.

The excavation has turned up pieces that show the sophistication and craft of ancient Alexandrian artists - a statue of Cleopatra's Father, portrayed as a sphinx ... a huge bust of Ceaserion, her son with Julius Caesar.

It was after Caesar's assassination that Cleopatra and his general Mark Antony began the romance that inspired one of our greatest theatrical tragedies: "Antony and Cleopatra."

"How hot was their attraction?" Braver asked.

"We know that for a better part of 11 years, they are together on and off," Schiff said. "He's married twice, I should say during his time, to other women. They have three children together. They have a very jolly time together."

Jolly, until Octavian - Julius Ceasar's nephew - launches a successful war against Mark Antony and his lover Cleopatra, and claims Egypt for himself.

Anthony eventually commits suicide and dies in Cleopatra's arms.

Within a few days, realizing that she was a vanquished queen, Cleopatra kills herself ... but perhaps not as dramatically as legend has it:

"There are many, many paintings of Cleopatra putting the asp to her breast," said Braver. "Is this not true?"

"Well, you know, it's a really great subject for paintings!" Schiff said. "First of all, you've got the naked breast."

"You don't buy the asp?"

"I'm not buying the snake," Schiff laughs.

But if there is disagreement about her death, there is no question about her impact: She was one of the most powerful women in history.

"If you think about it, you get Catherine the Great, who wasn't born royal; you get Queen Victoria, but she rules with a government; you get Queen Elizabeth, but her empire is smaller," said Schiff. "There's almost no one who both commands this kind of influence and who plays in an all-boys league."

In fact, frequently OUTSMARTS the boys।

Lady Gaga Tops Celebrity 100 List

forbes

The Queen Monster's $90 million in earnings and mastery of social media pushed her past perennial winner Oprah Winfrey. Not that Oprah's doing badly.

image

LOS ANGELES -- The men and women on our annual Celebrity 100 list--the most powerful people in the entertainment business this year--earned $4.5 billion over the last 12 months by starring in films, playing basketball, walking the catwalk and more. But they also rose to the top by garnering influence.

These days that means mastering social media. Lady Gaga topples Oprah Winfrey from her No.1 spot on our list, which she's given up for only the third time in seven years. Gaga is there not just because of the $90 million she earned with a monster tour, but also because of her 32 million Facebook fans and 10 million Twitter followers--aka Little Monsters--who helped move 1 million digital downloads of her recent single "Born This Way" in only five days. They're also happy to buy the MAC makeup, Monster headphones and Virgin Mobile phones she features in her videos.

Oprah doesn't fall far though. The daytime talk maven, who earned $290 million last year, comes in second. Winfrey's earnings sank $25 million partially due to a reduced payday at SiriusXM. She still earns big from her syndicated show and from the stars she's spawned, including Dr. Phil (No. 18) Rachael Ray and Dr. Oz. Winfrey's earning power will take a bigger hit next year, when her syndicated show ends and she concentrates all her efforts on the struggling OWN network.

Maybe it would help if Oprah took a lesson from No. 3 Justin Bieber. The Biebs debuts on our list at the tender young age of 17, with $53 million earned over the last 12 months thanks to concerts, music sales and a 3-D documentary movie that grossed $100 million at the global box office. If this were 10 years ago Bieber would still be paying his dues in small clubs and schools, but thanks to the Internet, he's a sensation. His first hit song, "Baby," has been viewed 500 million times, a YouTube record.

Reality TV it girl Bethenny Frankel is another newbie worth noting. Famous for her newest hit show, Bethenny Ever After, she's used the small-screen platform to promote her Skinnygirl brand, helping her earn $55 million this year. She joins our list in 42nd place. Her entrepreneurial prowess--she sold her Skinnygirl Cocktails to Fortune Brands ( FOPRA - news - people ) and nabbed a $100 million cut of the deal paid out over multiple years--also put her on the cover of our magazine this week.

The Celebrity 100, which includes film and television actors, TV personalities, models, athletes, authors, musicians and comedians, is a measure of entertainment-related earnings and media visibility (exposure in print, television, radio and online). We also measure social media power by looking at each celebrity's presence on Facebook and Twitter. The earnings consist of pretax income between May 1, 2010, and May 1, 2011. Management, agent and attorney fees are not deducted. Forbes has been publishing the list annually since 1999.

Despite problems on and off the golf course, Tiger Woods still makes the top 10, ranking sixth with $75 million in annual earnings. Woods hasn't won a tournament since the revelation of his marital infidelities in 2009, and he recently withdrew from The Players Championship. But he still commands $3 million a pop for overseas appearances, and collects money from his remaining sponsors, Nike ( NKE - news - people ) and Electronic Arts ( ERTS - news - people )।

Having a much better year: Leonardo DiCaprio. The star makes the biggest leap on our list this year, rising from 71st place to 15th, thanks to two huge movies: Shutter Island and Inception. The latter earned $825 million at the global box office, making it the sixth-highest-earning film of 2010. That went a long way toward helping DiCaprio earn $77 million over the last 12 months.

Will Smith returns to our list this year thanks to the upcoming Men in Black III, in which he'll reprise his role as Agent J. Smith had fallen off of our list in 2010 because he took time off to nurture the budding careers of his children, Jaden and Willow. Jaden starred in a remake of The Karate Kid (which Smith produced); the film earned $360 million. Smith helped Willow with her hit song "Whip My Hair." The video for the song has been viewed 11 million times.

Notable drop-offs include Britney Spears, who ranked sixth in 2010 but stumbled this year because she didn't tour. With the Harry Potter franchise coming to an end, Daniel Radcliffe (who ranked 82nd last year) also failed to make the cut।
